STUR 28 cm (11 in) made in Germany review

The most expensive skillet in this hub and the only one that names its foundry region: cast in Rhineland-Palatinate, pre-seasoned, with the maker stating no chemical coatings of any kind.

What we would actually buy Materially, a cast iron pan is a cast iron pan. What this price buys is origin, finish and a company that tells you how to look after it.

What you are getting

A 28 cm (11 in) bare cast iron skillet, pre-seasoned, cast in a German foundry that the maker names by region. It works on every hob, in the oven, on a grill and over a fire, and it has no coating of any kind.

What the price is not buying

Better heat. Cast iron is cast iron: mass and shape decide the cooking, and a €25 skillet and a €219 one behave far more similarly than the gap suggests. What the money buys here is casting quality, finish, origin and the confidence that the same pan will be sold in ten years.

What the listing gets right

It states plainly that cast iron rusts if it is not cared for. That single line prevents more disappointment than any feature, and most listings at any price leave it out.

The honest comparison

Against the pans below it in this hub, this one wins on provenance and finish. If the budget is the constraint, the entry pans here cook the same food.

What we rate, and what we do not

Strengths

  • Names where it is cast, which almost no cast iron listing does
  • Pre-seasoned bare iron that improves with every use
  • The care instruction is on the listing rather than buried

Compromises

  • By far the most expensive pan in this hub, at several times the entry price
  • No weight published
  • Bare iron: it rusts if put away damp, as the maker says plainly

The questions that come in

Does it cook better than a cheaper cast iron pan?

Materially, cast iron is cast iron: mass and shape decide the cooking. What this price buys is casting quality, finish, a named German foundry, and a company likely to still sell the same pan in ten years.

Will it rust?

The maker says so plainly on the listing: cast iron rusts if it is not dried and cared for after use. Wash, dry on the heat until nothing steams off, and wipe a trace of oil in.
