  • Publishes a capacity — four pounds — which only two other starters here do
  • Four pounds is the smallest published capacity here, so it suits a smaller grill

Best for: A medium kettle, with a blower thrown in — the cheaper of two apparently identical kits

What you are getting

An 11.5 × 7 × 7 inch zinc-plated chimney holding 4 pounds of coal, with a nylon handle, a heat shield, a portable air blower and a BBQ glove.

Almost certainly the same body as the homenote, for thirteen dollars less

Eau — $23.99 — 11.5 × 7 × 7 in — zinc plated — nylon handle — blower + glove homenote — $36.99 — 11.5 × 7 × 7 in — zinc plated — wooden handle — blower + cubes + mitts

Both publish the identical dimensions, the identical material, and the identical claim: lights coals 3 times faster than commonly used flat square starters.

What homenote adds is a wooden handle in place of nylon, and fire cubes in the kit. Thirteen dollars for those.

The catalog weights disagree — 1,043 g (36.8 oz) here against homenote’s 454 g (16 oz) — and 454 g (16 oz) for an eleven-inch steel cylinder is not plausible.

The clearest statement of why a chimney at all

“no chemical residue when you cook, eliminating lighter fluid taste on food and solvent smell in the air”

Four listings here mention avoiding lighter fluid. This is the one that says what you are avoiding.

Four pounds

One of only three capacities published on this shelf, and the smallest: Amazon Basics 6.6 lb, Oklahoma Joe’s about 6.25 lb, this 4 lb. Which suits a smaller kettle.

What is not published

No lighting time against another chimney — the “3 times faster” is against a flat square starter, a different thing. No steel thickness. No warranty.

The questions that come in

Is it the same product as the homenote?

On everything either listing publishes, the body is the same. Eau at $23.99 and homenote at $36.99 both give 11.5 × 7 × 7 inches, both say zinc plated steel, both carry a heat shield, both include a portable air blower, and both make the identical claim — lights coals "3 times faster than commonly used flat square starters". The differences are the handle (nylon here, wooden on the homenote) and the kit (homenote adds fire cubes and heat-resistant mitts; this adds a BBQ glove). The catalog weights contradict each other — 1,043 g (36.8 oz) here against 454 g (16 oz) there — and 454 g (16 oz) for an eleven-inch steel cylinder is not credible. Unless you want the cubes, this is the cheaper way to the same chimney.

What is the blower for?

Forcing the draft instead of waiting for it. A chimney starter works by convection: the fire heats air, the air rises, and that rising pulls more air through the coals. A battery air blower short-circuits the wait by pushing air in at the base, which is genuinely useful in two situations — damp charcoal, and dense fuel like hardwood lump or binchotan that will not catch on paper alone. The Bincho Grill on this shelf explains that case: binchotan is "dense and difficult to ignite without a chimney starter that provides proper airflow". The caveat is that a blower is one more thing with batteries in it, and homenote carries the only safety warning on this shelf about exactly that: reverse polarity "risks a short circuit".

Is four pounds enough?

For a smaller kettle, yes; for a 22-inch one, it is a light load. Only three starters on this shelf publish a capacity: Amazon Basics 6.6 pounds, Oklahoma Joe’s up to 100 briquettes — about 6.25 pounds at an ounce each — and this at 4 pounds. Four pounds poured into a 22-inch kettle gives you a bed deep enough for a two-zone fire banked to one side, but not enough to sear across the whole grate. On an 18-inch kettle or a tabletop grill it is about right, and you waste less. The slight oddity is that the published dimensions here (11.5 × 7 × 7 in) are larger than the Amazon Basics (10.8 × 6.7 in), which claims two and a half pounds more.
