What you are getting

An 11.5 × 7 × 7 inch zinc-plated chimney with a fireproof wooden handle and heat shield, plus a portable air blower, lighter cubes of 20 × 20 × 50 mm (0.79 × 0.79 × 1.97 in) and heat-resistant mitts.

Thirteen dollars more than an apparently identical body

homenote — $36.99 — 11.5 × 7 × 7 in — zinc plated — wooden handle — blower + cubes + mitts Eau — $23.99 — 11.5 × 7 × 7 in — zinc plated — nylon handle — blower + glove

Both publish the identical dimensions, the identical material and the identical claim: lights 3 times faster than commonly used flat square starters.

What the thirteen dollars buys: a wooden handle instead of nylon, fire cubes, and mitts instead of a glove. Decide whether that is the price.

The catalog weights also disagree: 454 g (16 oz) here against Eau’s 1,043 g (36.8 oz) — and 454 g (16 oz) for an eleven-inch steel cylinder is not plausible.

What the cubes are made of

“100% From Nature - Harmless wood shavings - odorless and tasteless, will not flavor food”

The only listing here that says what is in a fire cube, which is a fair question for something you burn under your dinner. Each cube is stated to burn about eight minutes.

BEAU JARDIN adds the other reason to keep cubes: they work “on rainy days”, where newspaper will not.

And the only safety warning on this shelf

Not about fire. About the blower: install batteries correctly (match +/- on cover). Reverse polarity risks a short circuit!

What is not published

No capacity, where Eau publishes 4 pounds for the same body. No steel thickness. No lighting time in minutes. No warranty.

The questions that come in

Is it worth $13 more than the Eau?

Only if you want the cubes and the wooden handle. The two listings publish the same body: 11.5 × 7 × 7 inches, zinc plated steel, a heat shield, a portable air blower, and word-for-word the same claim — lights coals "3 times faster than commonly used flat square starters". The differences are the handle (fireproof wooden here, nylon on the Eau), the hand protection (mitts here, a glove there) and the fire cubes, which only this kit includes. Thirteen dollars is a lot for a box of cubes, though wood is genuinely a better handle material than nylon — it conducts heat far more slowly. Note also that Eau publishes a 4-pound capacity for the same dimensions and this listing publishes none.

What is in a fire cube?

Wood shavings, and homenote is the only listing on this shelf to say so: "100% From Nature - Harmless wood shavings - odorless and tasteless, will not flavor food", in cubes of 20 × 20 × 50 mm (0.79 × 0.79 × 1.97 in) each burning about eight minutes. That is a fair question answered, because you are burning these directly under food. The usual construction is compressed wood shavings bound with wax, and the two things that matter are that they do not smell of kerosene and that they burn long enough to catch the charcoal above — eight minutes is comfortably long enough. BEAU JARDIN gives the other reason to keep a box: cubes "can even work normally on rainy days", where crumpled newspaper will not. CADARA is the one that specifies the newspaper alternative: three crumpled sheets.

Can it weigh 454 grams?

Not for this body. The catalog lists 454 g (16 oz) — one pound — for an 11.5 × 7 × 7 inch zinc-plated steel cylinder with a heat shield and a wooden handle. The Eau, which publishes exactly the same dimensions and material, is listed at 1,043 g (36.8 oz). And the published weights across this shelf run from 603 g (21.3 oz) for the small Kingsford Compact (8.1 × 5.7 × 10 in) up to 1,588 g (56 oz) for the stainless Bincho Grill. A full-size chimney at 454 g (16 oz) would be the lightest object here by a wide margin while being among the largest. Treat it as a catalog error — possibly the weight of the blower or the cubes alone — and expect something close to the Eau’s kilogram.
