A wooden handle where it counts

A mortar and a chimney starter.

The chimney starter

Ø 16 × 27 cm (6.3 × 10.6 in), metal, with a heat-resistant wooden handle stated for safety when tipping. That is the moment a chimney starter is dangerous: lifting a cylinder of lit charcoal and pouring it into a barbecue. A bare metal handle that has been sitting over a fire is the wrong thing to be holding then.

The mortar

An 8 × 5 cm (3.1 × 2 in) bowl with a 9 cm (3.5 in) pestle, in white, for herbs, spices, peppercorns, salt and garlic. Small — it is a spice mortar rather than a pesto mortar.

The size caution

Sixteen centimeters of chimney starter is a medium load. A full 57 cm (22.4 in) kettle wants more, and the 6.5 liter starter in that hub is the answer.

The one to look at first

The chimney starter, for the handle.
