What the maker puts in writing
- “say goodbye to endless kitchen tools and hello to the 4 in 1 all purpose cheese grater; 4 sides allow you to grate, shred, zest and slice nearly any food with ease; use on vegetables, fruits, chocolate, bread, hard and soft cheeses like parmesan”
- “the sharp, high quality stainless steel blades on all 4 sides… rust resistant and dishwasher safe”
- “comfortable and ergonomic handle… measures at 5 by 3.1 by 9.2 inches, making it oversized and easier than most others to use”
- “the box grater’s slip resistant border easily grips counters and food prep surfaces to help it stay in place. The border is also removable for easier cleaning”
- “a detachable container with a removeable lid attaches seamlessly to the bottom of the grater… it includes measurements”
The detail the rest of the shelf misses
“The border is also removable for easier cleaning.”
Eleven graters here have a non-slip rubber base or border. It stops the tool sliding — and Spring Chef names its second job on this shelf: it also stops grated food escaping out of the open bottom.
What nobody else addresses is what happens next.
Grated cheese works into the seam between the rubber and the steel. No brush reaches it. A few weeks of that and the rim smells, and you cannot get at it without a knife.
This border comes off. So does Spring Chef’s rubber bottom. The other nine are fixed.
On a tool that handles dairy and then goes in a drawer, that is a hygiene point rather than a convenience.
Five by three point one by nine point two inches
Published, which ten listings on this shelf do not manage.
And worth reading carefully, because it puts “XL” in perspective:
- 10 in — KitchenAid Gourmet (in the title)
- 9.5 in — Martha Stewart (in the title)
- 9.25 × 4.25 × 3.25 in — Norpro
- 9.2 × 5 × 3.1 in — this
So the grater calling itself XL is slightly shorter than two others here and narrower than the Norpro.
What the listing actually means by oversized is the feel of the body and the handle — the extra large size makes it effortless to use — rather than a record dimension.
Still: a box grater is an awkward thing to put away, and publishing the figures matters. OXO on this shelf sells its slimness for drawers, and KitchenAid warns you to check the dimensions against your cupboard before buying.
A lidded container, which six of thirteen have
Detachable, attaches to the bottom, removable lid, with measurements on it.
That is the full set: catch, measure, cover, put in the fridge. Six graters on this shelf have a container — the three KitchenAids, OXO, Urbanstrive and this — and seven have none.
What is not published is the capacity. KitchenAid’s 4-Sided grater is the only listing here that gives a volume: a 3-cup container, graduated to 2 cups. This one says only “includes measurements”.
Three hundred and forty grams
Upper-middle on this shelf, at 22.8 grams per dollar:
- 621 g (21.9 oz) — WALDWERK (with an oak base) · 499 g (17.6 oz) — KitchenAid 4-Sided · 458 g (16.2 oz) — KitchenAid Gourmet
- 340 g (12 oz) — this · 330 g (11.6 oz) — Urbanstrive · 308 g (10.9 oz) — Spring Chef
- 146 g (5.1 oz) — Norpro
Mass on a grater is panel stiffness: a thin face flexes under a hard block and the edges skip, which is what “blunt” usually means.
It refers to the plastics — here the handle, the border and the container — and the container is the part that matters, since that is what holds food in a fridge.
The listing does not name the polymer, which is the gap. Urbanstrive on this shelf states “Black TPE material (5%)” and gives its steel as 304, and it is the only grater here to publish a composition at all.
The steel never contained BPA, so the claim says nothing about the grating surfaces themselves.
What is not published
No steel grade. Three graters here publish 304 — Urbanstrive, Cuisipro, WALDWERK. The cheaper grade sold under the same word is 430, which rusts at punched edges.
No blade process. Only WALDWERK addresses it, and does so by naming the alternative: other manufacturers cheaply stamp the blades out of the material. We etch them.
No container capacity. No warranty.
