What we would actually buy Twenty-three centimeters of rod, published as such. That single number makes this the easiest steel here to choose.
What you are getting
A honing steel 36 cm (14.2 in) overall with 23 cm (9.1 in) of actual rod, in special blade steel with a smooth plastic handle.
The published rod length
The only listing in this hub to separate the two. Overall length includes a handle that does nothing; 23 cm (9.1 in) of rod is what clears a 20 cm (7.9 in) blade with room to spare.
What is not published
The cut grade — fine, medium or coarse. It changes whether the rod realigns an edge or lightly abrades it, and most kitchen use wants the gentler end.
The usual limit
Steel rods are for blades up to about 58 HRC. Above that, ceramic.

The questions that come in
Why is rod length published separately?
Because overall length includes the handle, which does no work. The rod is what the blade passes over, and 23 cm (9.1 in) is the figure that tells you whether your knife fits.
Does the handle material matter?
For grip and comfort during a downward stroke, yes. Smooth plastic is standard; a textured or soft-touch grip holds better with wet hands.

25 cm (9.8 in) · German quality steel · stated for regular maintenance between sharpenings
A 25 cm (9.8 in) honing rod in German steel — the length that clears a 20 cm (7.9 in) chef’s knife properly, which the shorter rods in this hub do not.
Best for: A 20 cm (7.9 in) chef’s knife, honed weekly.
The top of this hub: a 30 cm (11.8 in) oval rod with a sapphire cut and a surface stated at 65 HRC — hard enough to hone the blades a conventional steel cannot.
Best for: A kitchen with good European knives, honed properly.
