Tefal Jamie Oliver Cook Smart 28 cm (11 in) review

An uncoated 18/10 stainless pan with a riveted cast stainless handle, and a listing that teaches the water-droplet test rather than assuming you know it.

What we would actually buy The right first stainless pan, largely because the maker explains how to use it on the listing itself.

What you are getting

A 28 cm (11 in) uncoated 18/10 stainless pan on a Thermo-Fusion induction base, with a riveted cast stainless handle and an oven rating. There is no coating, which means there is nothing to degrade — the pan outlives the cook.

The instruction on the listing

Tefal publishes the water-droplet test in the product description: heat the pan empty, flick in a few drops of water, and when they gather into balls that skate across the surface the pan is ready for oil. That is the whole technique for stainless, and printing it is more useful than any specification on the page.

What it will not do

Eggs, delicate fish and pancakes belong in a coated pan. Stainless can be persuaded on a good day; it is not what this is for.

A note on the name

Amazon’s metadata attributes this pan to Rowenta. The product itself is sold as Jamie Oliver by Tefal, and both brands belong to the same group. The page carries the name the product carries.

What we rate, and what we do not

Strengths

  • Uncoated, so there is nothing to wear out
  • The listing publishes the water-droplet test, which is the technique the pan actually needs
  • Riveted cast stainless handle, oven safe

Compromises

  • Sold under Jamie Oliver by Tefal while Amazon’s metadata attributes it to Rowenta — same group, different name
  • No oven temperature limit published
  • Uncoated stainless is unforgiving until the technique is habit
