What you are getting

Three sculpted tinted tempered glass bowls — 1.3, 2.3 and 4.5 quarts — with BPA-free plastic lids that are freezer, microwave and top-rack dishwasher safe. 4,019 g (141.8 oz). Designed and manufactured in the USA.

Four and a half quarts, with lids

Which makes this the Pyrex to buy. The Essentials set beside it stops at 2.5 qt — a prep set — and has no lids at all, for $17 less.

Four and a half quarts beats a cake batter. And the glass goes in the microwave, which none of the six steel sets on this shelf can claim.

Made in the USA, and a cited source

The only country of origin published on this shelf.

And the only cited market claim: PYREX IS THE #1 BRAND OF GLASS BAKEWARE. Source: The NPD Group / Retail Tracking Service.

That is the same research house Farberware cites on the chopping board shelf — which at least gave a measurement period. This one does not.

The lids are the weak part

BPA-free plastic, and stated top-rack dishwasher safe.

Read that against Priority Chef on this shelf, which says “wash lids by hand”, and Ziruma, which supplies glass lids because plastic ones “warp” and stop sealing. Hand wash them.

Four kilograms is the cost of glass

4,019 g — about 1.3 kg a bowl, against 590 g for a Cuisinart steel bowl.

The benefit is stability: a heavy bowl does not spin, which matters because no Pyrex set here has a non-slip base.

What is not published

No non-slip base. No pour spout. No measurement marks. No warranty — where Pyrex’s own Essentials set states a limited one.

The questions that come in

Which Pyrex should I buy?

This one, and the gap is wider than $17 suggests. Pyrex Essentials — 1, 1.5, 2.5 qt — $17.99 — no lids. Pyrex Colors — 1.3, 2.3, 4.5 qt — $34.99 — lids included. The Essentials set tops out at 2.5 quarts, which is the smallest maximum on this shelf: fine for a dressing or a salad for two, and too small to beat a cake batter in without it climbing out. This reaches 4.5 qt, which is a proper baking bowl, and it adds lids so each bowl becomes a fridge container. What Essentials has that this does not is a stated limited warranty. If one glass set is all you want, this is it.

Is the "made in USA" claim worth something?

It is worth noting mainly because nothing else on this shelf publishes an origin at all. Pyrex states "this Pyrex line is proudly designed and manufactured in the U.S.A" — and across all thirteen listings here, no other country of origin appears. For glass bakeware, where the thing that matters is the tempering — the controlled heating and cooling that puts the surface under compression and makes the glass resist thermal shock — a stated manufacturing location is a modest proxy for a known process. It is also the only cited claim here: "#1 brand of glass bakeware. Source: The NPD Group / Retail Tracking Service", the same house Farberware cites on the chopping board shelf — though Farberware at least gave a date.

Four kilograms — is that a problem?

It cuts both ways, and it is the honest cost of glass. 4,019 g (141.8 oz) for three bowls and lids is roughly 1.3 kg (2.9 lb) a bowl, against about 590 g (20.8 oz) for one of Cuisinart’s steel bowls. A full 4.5-quart glass bowl is a genuine two-handed lift, and it is the reason people keep a light steel bowl for whisking even when they own glass. The benefit is stability: a heavy bowl does not spin under a whisk, which matters because neither Pyrex set here has a non-slip base where six of the thirteen sets do. And the other glass caveat is failure mode: tempered glass is strong but fails suddenly and completely, where a dented steel bowl carries on for years.
