What you are getting

Twelve-inch tongs in 18/0 stainless steel with real oak handles and torsion spring tension, for ten dollars.

It publishes a real steel designation

18/0 means 18 per cent chromium and zero nickel. That is a genuine specification, and it is the honest end of the market: ferritic steel, so it is magnetic, cheaper than 18/8, and slightly less corrosion-resistant at cut edges.

Compare the two other grades claimed on this shelf. XUDAKAIXIN says “medical-grade stainless steel” and Taimasi “premium food grade stainless steel” — neither of which is a standardized designation at all.

Torsion spring, not a scissor pivot

Torsion spring technology… precision control.

A torsion spring holds the arms open and closes under your grip, which gives feel: you can hold an asparagus spear without crushing it or a chicken thigh without dropping it.

Alpha Grillers goes the other way with lockable tongs — which matters for the drawer, because sprung tongs spring open in it.

Twelve inches is the short end

Taimasi makes the argument this shelf is about: long handles let you “cook your meat from a safe distance”. And twelve inches over a loaded charcoal kettle puts your hand above the coals.

XUDAKAIXIN publishes 24 inches; GrillPro 15.

And it is oak, with no washing instruction

Three tools here have wooden handles. Anmarko says “handwash only” — correct. XUDAKAIXIN claims acacia and dishwasher safety. GRILLHOGS says nothing.

Wash it by hand.

The questions that come in

What does 18/0 actually mean?

Eighteen per cent chromium and no nickel — and it is a real designation, which is more than two other listings on this shelf manage. Stainless steels are commonly given as two numbers: 18/10 or 18/8 is austenitic, with nickel, the most corrosion-resistant and non-magnetic; 18/0 is ferritic, with the chromium but none of the nickel, so it is magnetic, noticeably cheaper, and slightly less resistant at cut and welded edges. For grill tongs that is a defensible choice: the tool lives outdoors and gets greasy rather than sitting in brine. Set it against XUDAKAIXIN’s "medical-grade stainless steel" and Taimasi’s "premium food grade stainless steel", neither of which corresponds to any standard. Eight listings here publish nothing at all.

Is twelve inches long enough?

For a gas grill or a griddle, yes. For a charcoal kettle with a full chimney load, no — and Taimasi on this shelf makes the argument plainly: long-handled tools let you "cook your meat from a safe distance without worry of getting burned". Twelve inches means your knuckles sit roughly over the grate, which above live coals radiating upward is uncomfortable within seconds. The lengths published here: XUDAKAIXIN 24 in — double this — GrillPro 15 in, Home-Complete 13.5 to 14 in piece by piece, and this at 12. Six listings publish no length at all, including Taimasi, which makes the argument. If you cook over charcoal, buy longer.

Should the oak handles go in the dishwasher?

No, and this listing does not say so — which puts it in the middle of a muddle this shelf creates. Three tools here have wooden handles. Anmarko gets it right: "metal spatula set is handwash only", with a wooden handle. XUDAKAIXIN claims an acacia handle *and* that "these grill tools are dishwasher-safe", which cannot both be true — a dishwasher raises the grain on wood, lifts any finish and eventually splits it. GRILLHOGS publishes neither a dishwasher claim nor a prohibition. Wash it by hand, dry it, and oil the oak occasionally. The listings here with no wood — Amazon Basics, Alpha Grillers, Taimasi, BLACKSTONE — are the ones where a machine is genuinely fine.
