WMF Diadem Plus 16 cm (6.3 in) vs Tefal Duetto 16 cm (6.3 in) with lid

Which 16 cm (6.3 in) saucepan, uncoated and lidless or lidded with a strainer?

Both are 16 cm (6.3 in), which is the most-used pot size in most kitchens. One is uncoated Cromargan that publishes three figures and comes without a lid at all; the other arrives with a glass straining lid and pouring spouts on both sides. The lid is the whole difference.

A tick marks the better answer on that line only. Counting ticks does not decide the page — the two verdicts below do, because these products answer different questions.

Which of the two suits your cooking

Buy the WMF Diadem Plus 16 cm (6.3 in)

Buy the WMF if you want a pan that outlives everything else in the cupboard and you already own lids. Uncoated Cromargan, 1.5 liters, 7.5 cm (3 in) high and oven safe to 250 °C (482 °F) — and it publishes the hob ring it is matched to, which nothing else in this hub does. There is no lid; budget for one.

Tefal Duetto 16 cm (6.3 in) with lid

No amazon.com listing was found for this one. We hold references for other markets but none for the United States, so it may not be buyable here — which is the first thing to weigh against anything below.

Buy the Tefal if the straining lid appeals, and for one or two portions it should. Draining rice or pasta through the lid removes a colander from the washing-up every single time, the spouts work for either hand, and a stated ten-year guarantee is unusual at this price.

The questions that come in

Does a 16 cm (6.3 in) pan really need a lid?

For rice, eggs and anything that simmers, yes. A pan without one boils dry faster and takes longer to come to temperature. If you buy the WMF, buy a lid with it.

Why does the matched hob ring matter?

On a gas or electric ring, a pan much wider than the flame heats unevenly and one much narrower wastes heat up the sides. WMF states Ø 14.5 cm (5.7 in) for this pan, which is a genuinely useful figure.

Is uncoated better for a saucepan?

Usually. A saucepan mostly holds liquid, which does not stick, so a coating buys little and wears anyway. The exception is milk, where a coated milk pan genuinely helps.
