Tefal Easy Cook & Clean 28 cm (11 in) wok review

A coated 28 cm (11 in) wok with Tefal’s Thermo-Signal indicator, made in France — and, like its grill pan sibling, explicitly not suitable for induction.

What we would actually buy Fine on gas, useless on induction. The coating also caps how hard you can drive it, which is what a wok is for.

Read this first

Tefal states this wok is suitable for gas, electric and ceramic hobs but not induction. On an induction hob it will not heat at all.

What you are getting

A 28 cm (11 in) coated wok with a titanium-reinforced nonstick surface and the Thermo-Signal indicator in the base — a pattern that disappears at frying temperature, which in a wok is more useful than in a flat pan.

The heat ceiling

A stir-fry wants the hottest surface a domestic hob can produce. A nonstick coating has a stated limit well below what carbon steel will take, so this wok cooks vegetables cleanly and will not give the seared, slightly smoky result a seasoned steel wok does over a strong flame.

What it is good at

Everything a coated pan is good at, in a wok shape: noodles, eggs, anything that would stick, and cleaning up in seconds. If that is what you want from a wok, this is the sensible one.

What we rate, and what we do not

Strengths

  • The cheapest wok in this hub, from a maker with a long coating record
  • Thermo-Signal is genuinely useful in a wok, where temperature is everything
  • Coated, so vegetables and noodles release without a seasoned surface

Compromises

  • NOT induction compatible — stated by the maker, and the first thing to check
  • A coating cannot take the heat a stir-fry really wants
  • No stated oven limit

The questions that come in

Does it work on induction?

No. Tefal states gas, electric and ceramic hobs, and specifically not induction. That is the first thing to check before anything else on this page.

Can it be driven as hard as a steel wok?

No. A nonstick coating has a stated limit well below what carbon steel takes, so this wok cooks vegetables cleanly and will not give the seared result a seasoned steel wok does over a strong flame.

Our score

6.9/ 10

Fine on gas, useless on induction. The coating also caps how hard you can drive it, which is what a wok is for.
