What you are getting

Six plastic bowls and six transparent lids — stated leak-proof and tight-fitting — in thicker food-grade material, microwave and freezer safe, top-rack dishwasher friendly, with a lifetime guarantee.

A lifetime guarantee, which three sets here have

We love and take pride in our plastic mixing bowls and back these up with a lifetime guarantee.

The others are COOK WITH COLOR (100 per cent satisfaction) and Pyrex Essentials (“a limited warranty”, undetailed). Ten sets publish nothing.

Transparent lids, which is the useful kind

You can see what is in the bowl without taking the lid off — which matters once a mixing bowl becomes a fridge container, and six sets here have lids.

And leak-proof: the listing says they “allow transporting food without any spills”, which a loose lid does not.

It names the problem thin plastic has

Thicker material that will not bend even when using these with hand mixers, immersion blenders, or a simple whisk.

Which is the right concern. A thin plastic bowl flexes when a hand mixer is working against the wall, and a flexing bowl lets the beaters touch it.

Five dollars a bowl, with lids

Only COOK WITH COLOR is cheaper at $4.50 — and it publishes capacities where Zulay publishes none.

What is not published

No capacities at all, so the set cannot be sized. No material name, where COOK WITH COLOR says polypropylene. No non-slip base, which six sets here have. No pour spout. And the lids are plastic — Priority Chef says wash those by hand.

The questions that come in

What is a lifetime guarantee worth on a plastic bowl?

More than on most things, because plastic bowls fail in ways a guarantee can cover. They crack at the rim where a nesting bowl has been forced in and out; they warp after a hot dishwasher cycle, which is how a set stops nesting; and the lids stop sealing, which is the commonest complaint. Zulay states it plainly: "we back these up with a lifetime guarantee. If there are ever any issues, just contact us." The only other guarantees here are COOK WITH COLOR’s satisfaction promise and Pyrex Essentials’ "limited warranty" with no detail. Ten of thirteen sets publish nothing. What a warranty will not cover is staining and smell, which is wear — and the reason to look for a named polymer.

Does it matter that no capacities are published?

Yes, because it is the only way to size a set, and this is a six-bowl set with no figures at all. The useful question is whether the biggest bowl will take a cake batter — which needs 4 to 5 quarts to beat in without it climbing out. On this shelf COOK WITH COLOR publishes 0.32 to 5.8 qt, Cuisinart and OXO both top out at 5 qt, KitchenAid and Ziruma at 4.5, and Pyrex Essentials at only 2.5. Zulay publishes "a variety of sizes" and nothing else. Since COOK WITH COLOR offers six bowls with lids for $26.99 against Zulay’s $29.99, and publishes its capacities and its polymer, it is the better documented of the two six-bowl sets.

Will the bowls flex under a hand mixer?

Zulay says no, and the concern is exactly right. A thin plastic bowl flexes when a hand mixer’s beaters work against the wall — and a flexing wall means the beaters touch it, which shaves plastic into the batter and wears a bowl out from the inside. The listing claims "thicker material that will not bend even when using these with hand mixers, immersion blenders, or a simple whisk", and the immersion blender is the harder test: it runs at the bottom of the bowl where the blade is closest to the surface. Two stainless sets here make the same argument — Priority Chef ("thicker than industry standard") and Boskermeal ("resist dents... better than thinner brands") — and none of the three publishes a gauge.
