BBQ-Toro Ø 34 cm (13.4 in) ribbed cast iron review

The largest pan in this hub at 34 cm (13.4 in), with both a loop handle and a stick handle, two spouts, pre-seasoned, and stated for direct use in a fire.

What we would actually buy The size is its point and its limitation. Check your ring and your oven before ordering.

What you are getting

A 34 cm (13.4 in) ribbed cast iron pan with a loop handle, a stick handle and two pouring spouts, pre-seasoned and rated for a fire as well as a hob. The second handle is not decoration — a pan this size, full and hot, is a two-handed object.

The size question

34 cm (13.4 in) is larger than any domestic hob ring. The base will heat in the middle and run cooler at the edge, which cast iron’s conductivity partly compensates for and does not eliminate. Outdoors over a fire, where heat reaches the whole underside, that objection disappears.

Where it belongs

Over coals, on a fire pit, or on a large gas hob. It is the pan for cooking for a group, and it is more awkward than the 26 cm (10.2 in) pans in this hub for cooking for two.

Before ordering

Measure the oven. A 34 cm (13.4 in) pan with two handles needs more clearance than the diameter suggests, and it is the sort of thing discovered after delivery.

What we rate, and what we do not

Strengths

  • Two handles, which is what a 34 cm (13.4 in) cast iron pan genuinely needs
  • Large enough to cook for four without crowding
  • Pre-seasoned and rated for an open fire

Compromises

  • 34 cm (13.4 in) overhangs most domestic hob rings, so the outer edge runs cooler
  • No weight published, and this is the biggest iron pan in the catalog
  • Needs a large oven to fit at all

The questions that come in

Will 34 cm (13.4 in) fit my hob?

It will overhang most domestic rings, so the base heats in the middle and runs cooler at the edge. Cast iron partly compensates by conducting sideways. Over a fire, where heat reaches the whole underside, the objection disappears.

Why two handles?

Because a 34 cm (13.4 in) cast iron pan, full and hot, is a two-handed object. The loop handle is what you actually lift it by, and the stick handle is for steadying and pouring.
