BURNHARD 30 cm (11.8 in) pre-seasoned cast iron review

A 30 cm (11.8 in) pre-seasoned cast iron grill pan built for a barbecue as much as a hob: spouts, sturdy handles, and stated for gas barbecue, fire pit, oven and induction alike.

What we would actually buy The most versatile pan in this hub: right size, right material, and rated for the barbecue where it will spend half its life.

What you are getting

A 30 cm (11.8 in) pre-seasoned cast iron grill pan with pouring spouts, rated for a gas barbecue, a fire pit, an oven and any hob including induction. Nothing about it is unusual, and everything about it is sized right.

Why 30 cm (11.8 in)

The 26 cm (10.2 in) pans in this hub cook for two; the 34 cm (13.4 in) one overhangs a domestic ring. 30 cm (11.8 in) sits between them, takes four chops, and still fits a standard oven.

What “pre-seasoned” means here

The maker has applied and baked a first layer, so the pan works from the first use. That layer is thin. It builds with every fatty thing cooked in it, and it is why a cast iron pan that is used weekly is better in year two than in month one.

The care, once

Hot water and a chainmail scrubber, dry on the heat, wipe a trace of oil in. Detergent occasionally does no harm; putting it away wet does.

What we rate, and what we do not

Strengths

  • Ready to use out of the box, with a patina that keeps improving
  • Explicitly rated for a gas barbecue and a fire pit, not just a hob
  • 30 cm (11.8 in) is the useful middle between the 26 cm (10.2 in) and 34 cm (13.4 in) pans here

Compromises

  • No weight published
  • Bare iron needs drying and oiling after every wash
  • Like every cast iron grill pan, it smokes indoors at searing temperature

The questions that come in

Is it ready to use out of the box?

The maker states a pre-seasoned finish, so yes. That layer is thin, and it builds with every fatty thing cooked in it — the pan is better in year two than in month one.

Does it smoke indoors?

At the temperature that makes proper marks, any cast iron grill pan smokes. Indoors that needs extraction, and it is why many of these pans end up outdoors on a barbecue.
