wucgea 400/1000 + 3000/8000 set review

Two double-sided corundum stones covering four grits from 400 to 8000 — the full progression, including the coarse grit that repairs a chipped edge.

What we would actually buy The full progression at a low price. Use the 400 side only when you can see damage.

What you are getting

Two double-sided white corundum stones covering 400, 1000, 3000 and 8000 grit, with non-slip silicone mounts, to be soaked for 5 to 10 minutes before use.

The progression, complete

400 repairs. 1000 sharpens. 3000 refines. 8000 polishes. That is the full ladder, and most kitchens use only the middle two.

The temptation to avoid

Reaching for 400 because a knife feels blunt. Coarse grit is for visible damage; using it routinely shortens a blade by years.

What is missing

A flattening plate. Stones dish in the middle as they are used, and a dished stone cannot produce a straight edge — the fault then looks like technique.

What we rate, and what we do not

Strengths

  • Four grits including 400, which is what repairs a chip
  • Publishes the soaking time, which many stone listings omit
  • Two stones for the price of one good one

Compromises

  • A 400 grit stone removes a lot of steel — easy to overuse
  • No flattening plate in the set
  • No stone dimensions published

The questions that come in

When should I use 400 grit?

When there is a chip you can see, or a tip to rebuild. Not when a knife merely feels dull — coarse grit removes far more steel than the job needs, and a knife has a finite number of sharpenings in it.

Do these need soaking?

Yes — the maker states 5 to 10 minutes. A dry water stone clogs with steel, stops cutting and forces the pressure that pushes an angle off.
