Nought point three nine inches
The thickest boards on this shelf, and thickness is the specification that decides how a plastic board ages:
- 9.9 mm (0.39 in) — this
- 9.4 mm (0.37 in) — GORILLA GRIP · 8.9 — Viretang · 7.6 — Freshware
- 6.35 — Farberware 11 × 14 · 5 mm (0.20 in) — Farberware 8 × 10
- Six listings publish nothing at all
It does two things. It resists flex — a thin board bows when you lean on a corner or bridge a sink, and a bowing board under a knife is unpleasant and unsafe. And it resists warping: polypropylene softens as it heats, so a thin sheet cooling unevenly after a hot dishwasher cycle can take a permanent bow.
Fotouzy publishes a <90 ℃ wash limit on its 4 mm mats for exactly that reason. At 9.9 mm Empune has the margin not to need one.
And the weight agrees: 2,268 g (80 oz) for four boards, the heaviest set here.
TPR edge handles, not feet
Four boards on this shelf use rubber feet — Belwares, Viretang, ROTTOGOON, OXO. Feet work: they stop a board sliding and lift it so the underside dries.
What they also do is commit the board to one side up, because feet on one face hold it off the counter when you turn it over. Three listings here claim feet and reversibility, which cannot both be true.
TPR edge handles grip whichever way the board is laid. GORILLA GRIP’s rubber border does the same.
And TPR is a thermoplastic rubber, so it is molded onto the board rather than glued — which matters, because a stuck-on foot peeling off in the dishwasher is the usual way that feature fails.
A warranty, which ten boards here do not have
Backed by our limited lifetime warranty.
The only other is Fotouzy’s “lifetime no questions asked” — stronger wording, on a single $16.99 board.
On a plastic board a warranty covers one failure usefully: warping, which is what makes a board rock and stop being usable. Knife scoring is wear and no warranty covers wear.
Perimeter grooves on every board
Not just the large one. Viretang is the listing on this shelf honest enough to say that its extra feature is missing from the small board; Empune puts the groove on all four.
Eight seventy-five a board
The highest total on this shelf at $34.99, and mid-range per board:
- $2.50 — Fotouzy mats, four · $4.66 — Freshware or Viretang, three
- $5.66 — ROTTOGOON · $7.30 — GORILLA GRIP · $8.00 — HOMWE
- $8.75 — this, four
- $13.98 — OXO, two · $20.99 — Belwares, one
What is not published
No individual board dimensions. “Small, medium, large, and extra-large”, with no figures — where GORILLA GRIP, Freshware, Viretang and ROTTOGOON all publish theirs.
That matters most for the extra-large, because the comparison you would want is Belwares at 18 × 12 in. If Empune’s extra-large matches it, this set is the best buy on the shelf; if it is 16 inches, it is a fourth board rather than a carving board.
No material name, where both Farberwares, HOMWE and Fotouzy say polypropylene — non-porous, and tough enough to take a knife without shedding chips. “BPA-free plastic” names what is absent rather than what is there.

The questions that come in
Why is thickness the specification that matters?
Because it decides how a plastic board ages, and the range on this shelf is nearly double. Empune publishes boards "up to 0.39 in" — about 9.9 mm (0.39 in), the thickest here — against 9.4 mm (0.37 in) (GORILLA GRIP), 8.9 (Viretang), 7.6 (Freshware), 6.35 and 5 mm (0.20 in) (the two Farberwares), with six listings publishing nothing at all. Thickness does two things. It resists flex: a thin board bows when you lean on a corner or work over a sink, and a bowing board is both unpleasant and unsafe under a knife. And it resists warping: polypropylene softens as it heats, so a thin sheet cooling unevenly after a hot dishwasher cycle can take a permanent bow — which is exactly why Fotouzy publishes a *<90 ℃* limit on its 4 mm (0.16 in) mats.
What do TPR edge handles do that feet do not?
They grip without costing you the second face. Four boards on this shelf use rubber feet — Belwares, Viretang, ROTTOGOON, OXO — and feet work: they stop the board sliding, and they lift it so the underside dries. What they also do is commit the board to one side up, because feet on one face hold it off the counter when you turn it over. Empune’s "black TPR edge handles" and GORILLA GRIP’s "rubber border" are the two listings here that grip whichever way the board is laid. TPR is a thermoplastic rubber, so it is molded onto the board rather than stuck on — which also means it will not peel off in the dishwasher, the usual way a glued foot fails.
How big is "extra-large"?
The listing does not say, and that is the gap. Empune publishes "small, medium, large, and extra-large" with no dimensions for any of them — where GORILLA GRIP publishes 16 × 11.2, 13.8 × 9.6 and 11.8 × 8 in, Freshware all nine figures, and Viretang and ROTTOGOON three sizes each. The comparison you would want is with Belwares, which is a single board at 18 × 12 in for $20.99 — the largest on this shelf, named for whole chickens and roasts. If Empune’s extra-large matches that, the set is excellent value at $34.99 for four boards; if it is 16 inches, it is a fourth board rather than a carving board. Worth asking before ordering.
